According to a draft IPO prospectus reviewed by Reuters, Anthropic suffered a net loss of $80.7 billion during the opening six months of 2026. This deficit represents a steep increase from the $13 billion loss recorded during the corresponding timeframe last year.

Day-to-day operations were not the primary driver of this deficit. Instead, the total incorporated a $72 billion accounting charge stemming from a higher estimated value on bonds that convert into shares of Anthropic.

As reported by Reuters last week, Anthropic plans to go public in November. Following these financial disclosures, certain investors are now weighing a reduced valuation near $1.5 trillion.

Computing Spending Nearly Quadrupled

Infrastructure expenses climbed substantially as the firm continued pouring funds into artificial intelligence creation.

The S-1 filing shows the business spent almost $9 billion on infrastructure and computing power during the first half, up from $2.3 billion in the same timeframe last year.

Over a 10-year span, Anthropic has pledged to spend at least $518 billion on computing, cloud services, and infrastructure.

These numbers underscore the massive expense of building advanced artificial intelligence systems. Meanwhile, backers increasingly doubt whether outlays for data centers, chips, and computing infrastructure will yield adequate returns.

Reuters sought comment from Anthropic, but the company did not respond.

Revenue Reached $16.8 Billion in Third Quarter

Sources familiar with the situation told Reuters that Anthropic informed potential IPO backers during an October 14 meeting that third-quarter revenue hit $16.8 billion. This marked a 45% increase compared to the previous quarter.

While this expansion alleviated some worries regarding climbing costs, certain backers felt let down by the slower sequential pace of growth.

Between the first and second quarters, revenue more than doubled, landing at $11.6 billion in Q2.

A lukewarm reception for the upcoming IPO might also impact market sentiment across the broader artificial intelligence sector. Investors are monitoring the offering closely ahead of a potential stock market debut next year by rival OpenAI.

Anthropic Lost $42 Billion in 2025

Previous reports from Reuters indicated that Anthropic registered a net loss of $42 billion throughout 2025. Most of that amount also stemmed from an accounting charge tied to convertible notes.

The estimated fair value of those notes tripled compared to the prior year as the company valuation rose.

Without that charge, operations yielded a loss of approximately $8.1 billion against $4.6 billion in revenue for 2025.

Strong demand for Claude Code, a coding assistant used by developers to construct applications and write software, has helped the company.

The newest data demonstrates rapid revenue growth alongside exceptionally high financing, infrastructure, and computing expenses as the firm readies for a closely scrutinized artificial intelligence IPO.
