Apple is currently evaluating test versions of the iPhone Duo 2 featuring under-display Face ID, which might solve a major user grievance regarding its initial foldable phone.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported that Apple is testing facial recognition hardware underneath the external screen of the upcoming foldable device.

Gurman disclosed these details on his Power On podcast, stating that development on enhancements is underway while the inaugural iPhone Duo ships to buyers.

Face ID Could Replace Touch ID

The first iPhone Duo relies on a side button Touch ID fingerprint reader rather than the Face ID platform.

Early testers slammed the fingerprint reader, stating that the button is hard to reach based on how the phone is held.

Testers pointed out that unlocking requires holding a finger on the scanner, creating a slower experience than Face ID.

Apple intends to fix these issues by placing Face ID under the external screen of the iPhone Duo 2.

Yet, the firm needs to shrink essential parts like the dot projector and infrared camera to house the hardware inside the slim foldable chassis.

Action Button Could Return

Apple is also weighing the inclusion of the Action button on the iPhone Duo 2 alongside Face ID.

The customizable button features on other recent iPhone handsets but is absent on the initial foldable version.

Gurman mentioned that Apple is investigating methods to bring the option to future Duo devices, though its inclusion is not guaranteed.

Expected Launch

Apple aims for a 2027 release window for the second iteration of the iPhone Duo.

Still, Gurman cautioned that under-display Face ID remains in testing, with no certainty that the hardware will be ready for the upcoming phone.
