Karachi inhabitants deal with escalating food expenses on October 8 as a wheat shortage drives up flour rates throughout the urban area, pushing costs higher for staple flatbreads and sparking worries about affordable daily meals.

Retail rates climbed by roughly Rs. 14 per kilogram, pushing regular flour to Rs. 180 per kg, fine flour to Rs. 200, and chakki flour to Rs. 210. Bakery and tandoor operators cautioned that flatbread prices might climb further if expenses for flour and energy stay elevated.

The current conditions generated fears that certain vendors might demand as much as Rs. 50 for one roti, though authorities have not verified this figure as a uniform municipal rate. The Karachi commissioner recently established the mandated cost for a 100-gram chapati at Rs. 16, yet numerous shops continue charging above that amount.

The Sindh administration cleared the distribution of state wheat reserves at Rs. 12,500 per 100-kilogram sack starting October 15 to regulate rates, though the effect on store prices stays unclear.
