Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif cleared a proposed indicative wheat support price of Rs. 4,500 per maund covering the year 2027, marking a rise of Rs. 1,000 compared to the previous year rate of Rs. 3,500.
This new figure sits Rs. 500 short of what agricultural producers had requested. A statement issued by the Prime Minister Office explained that the adjustment seeks to support cultivators dealing with elevated inflation, higher fuel expenses, and increased costs of production.
Shehbaz stated that the measure was designed to boost wheat farming, allow growers to cover their expenses and secure a fair profit, and simultaneously reinforce national food security alongside domestic output.
The prime minister additionally noted the assistance provided by the provincial administrations of Punjab and Sindh throughout the price discussions.
National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain mentioned in a separate statement that federal authorities will work alongside the provinces to set a consistent wheat rate. He pointed out that cultivators previously obtained low rates for their crop and voiced optimism that market rates would drop shortly.
The minister further noted that the central government stored one million metric tons of wheat and gave orders to protect the reserves. He stated that provincial administrations hold the duty of supplying wheat to the market.
