Officials are looking into starting a six-a-side competition in the off-season for the Pakistan Super League, aiming to maintain supporter interest across the year and grow the brand.
Salman Naseer, the chief executive of the league, stated that the concept, provisionally called "PSL Sixes," might resemble the Hong Kong Sixes format, though he stressed that officials have not reached a final choice yet.
Speaking on a league podcast published prior to a governing council meeting, Naseer noted, "Nothing is finalized, but there are some exciting plans, and one of them is a sixes tournament, called the PSL Sixes, which will be in the off-season."
This potential event forms part of initiatives by the Pakistan Cricket Board to maintain visibility for the brand outside the standard calendar and generate extra income streams for commercial partners and franchises.
Organizers could also use the event to bring matches to smaller municipalities that have not yet hosted main league games. A shorter timeframe and fewer participants demand less logistical backing, turning compact venues into viable alternatives.
Naseer, who acts as an adviser to Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, mentioned that the competition might turn into a recurring event if discussions progress.
He explained, "We will look into the prospect of launching this tournament, and it will be very exciting, entertaining and engaging for the fans when it becomes a recurring feature."
He added, "Maybe even going to the smaller stadiums and smaller cities, where we have not been able to take the PSL and we know the fans are eager to watch cricket. So, a smaller event might be doable, which is what we are exploring."
Securing an appropriate timeframe presents a difficulty because international and domestic events occupy many foreign players.
The league has slowly grown its footprint domestically since starting in 2016. Organizers initially staged the competition in the United Arab Emirates before moving fixtures back to Pakistan.
Lahore, Karachi, Multan, and Rawalpindi have hosted the full tournament locally since 2020.
