The prime suspect in the murder of a teenage orphan in Multan was killed in an alleged encounter with Punjab's Crime Control Department (CCD) near Bahawalpur.

The accused, identified as Tauqeer Niaz, had been wanted for the death of 15-year-old Waseem Abbas, who police say was chased and deliberately run over by a car in Multan.

Police described Tauqeer as the main accused and noted that CCTV footage showed a vehicle pursuing the teenager before striking him.

He was later arrested and held on physical remand while investigators continued the murder probe.

Authorities then reported that he escaped from custody, and CCD officers later confronted him near the Northern Bypass in Bahawalpur.

CCD District Officer Irfan Akbar said officers signaled two men on a motorcycle to stop, but the suspects allegedly tried to flee and opened fire on the team.

Police said officers returned fire, leaving Tauqeer critically wounded.

According to CCD, the fatal bullets were fired by Tauqeer's own accomplice during the exchange, and the companion escaped.

Tauqeer later died from his injuries.

Officials have begun efforts to locate and arrest the second suspect who fled the scene.

The killing of Waseem Abbas, an orphan who was reportedly working at the time, had drawn wide attention.

Police had previously arrested Tauqeer after identifying him as the principal suspect in the case.
