Parents and guardians caught compelling minors into begging now face heavier punishments under a new ordinance from the Punjab government.
Offenders convicted under the Punjab Vagrancy Amendment Ordinance, 2026, risk imprisonment lasting up to three years alongside a penalty of Rs. 300,000.
Following approval by the provincial governor, the measure took effect instantly and broadens the legal definition of a child to cover 16-year-olds.
To bolster regional anti-begging measures, officials implemented administrative reforms that designate the Director General of Social Welfare and Baitul Mal as the Controller of Vagrancy.
