Severe traffic congestion has returned outside the District Courts in Rawalpindi due to illegal parking, even though a new underpass and overhead bridge were built to ease traffic flow.

Numerous cars and thousands of motorcycles occupy the road by the main entrance of the court, creating regular traffic jams during the peak morning and afternoon hours.

Officials previously declared a total ban on roadside parking alongside plans to build a commercial parking plaza near Jinnah Park with an estimated budget of Rs. 1 billion. Yet, construction work has not started following a period of six months.

Vehicles resumed parking along the road because there is no designated parking area, which defeats the goal of the recent infrastructure projects.

At the same time, the administration issued a roadside parking contract where the contractor collects Rs. 100 for each motorcycle and Rs. 200 for each car. These fees have reportedly sparked arguments between lawyers and visitors.

Visitors state that approximately 25,000 individuals, consisting of litigants, clerks, employees, and lawyers, come to the District Courts every day without access to an adequate parking structure.

These visitors requested that officials start building the planned parking plaza right away, stating that traffic bottlenecks will persist unless authorities solve the parking issue.

District Bar Association President Malik Tariq Mahmood Sajid Awan stated that the association brought up this matter with appropriate officials and requested the construction of the parking plaza near Jinnah Park.
