On October 22, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan, and the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network launched the inaugural Shahkaar Fankaar Alumni Artist Showcase at the USEFP building, displaying creations by graduates of U.S. exchange initiatives.
Lahore creator Minaa Haroon, a participant in a State Department cultural preservation exchange initiative, presents the debut display. Her pieces investigate links between family memories, history, identity, and inherited accessories, taking cues from her mother's jewelry collection.
Diplomatic community members, exchange graduates, and art experts gathered for the launch, where U.S. Embassy Public Engagement Director Heidi Smith awarded Haroon a Certificate of Recognition for her creative milestones and involvement as an exchange graduate.
Smith noted that bilateral educational and cultural programs have linked citizens of both nations for decades via creativity, learning, and innovation. She mentioned that Haroon's background demonstrates how global exchanges refine an artist's perspective and build bilateral bonds.
Serving as a visual artist and Assistant Director of Fine Arts at the Lahore Arts Council, Haroon traveled to America in April 2024 as part of the Cultural Preservation Professional Exchange Program.
According to Haroon, her stay in the United States broadened her grasp of cultural heritage. Stops at various museums and galleries exposed her to methods of interpreting, protecting, and transmitting traditions and history.
Dr. Peter K. Moran, Executive Director of the USEFP, provided a statement for the launch. He emphasized that cultural and educational exchanges spark new perspectives and question standard notions, calling art a tool for investigating such shifts and inspiring worldview reflections.
An exterior wall of the USEFP building displayed a 3D projection of Haroon's art during the opening. This display came from Islamabad firm Hoola Digital Pvt Ltd, which previously designed projections at Lahore Fort and the Pakistan Monument for the United States 250th independence anniversary on July 4, 2026.
Public viewings run through November 20 at the USEFP building in Islamabad, welcoming guests from Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Three additional graduate artists will receive solo shows at this gallery in 2027, according to USEFP plans. Founded in 1950, the foundation has facilitated research and educational exchanges for thousands of Americans and Pakistanis.
