Apple is developing an upgraded edition of its HomeView smart home display equipped with a bigger screen and a robotic arm, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, with a potential release window of 2027 or 2028.
The upcoming device might include a 9-inch screen capable of tracking users across a room, solving a major drawback of the existing HomeView model, which lacks a swiveling display. Potential brand names for the new product include HomeView Ultra, Max, or 360, though the official title is still undecided.
Apple recently introduced the HomeView as its initial smart home display last week, pairing a touchscreen with a speaker to compete against Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub in an established sector.
The existing HomeView suffers from distinct drawbacks, as its value relies heavily on users already possessing Apple devices and having minimal investment in rival smart home platforms, while lacking a pivoting display.
Gurman states that Apple recognizes these flaws and is building a more capable device where the larger screen sits on a robotic metal arm to track moving users, alongside the capability to recognize individual speakers.
The current HomeView actually functioned as an older hardware item that waited extensively for software readiness, spending nearly a year in warehouses prior to its release according to Gurman.
Those warehouse delays account for hardware specifications like thick bezels, an A18 chip, and 8GB of RAM, following multiple postponements that shifted the release from spring 2025 to summer, fall, and eventually spring 2026.
Carrying the codename J595, the upgraded 9-inch HomeView targets a 2027 or 2028 debut, although Apple has not verified the schedule or final specs, and the unit will likely cost more than the current version while lacking a confirmed price or official name.
