Pakistan's passport offices and diplomatic missions abroad, including those in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations, started issuing e-passports on October 15, ending the issuance of machine-readable passports.
The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports had set October 14 as the final day to accept applications for machine-readable passports. Starting October 15, applicants may submit requests only for e-passports.
Current machine-readable passports will continue to be valid until their expiration dates and will not be revoked immediately. The e-passport initiative seeks to boost passport security and align Pakistani travel documents with International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
Officials note the change will also facilitate the use of electronic gates at both domestic and international travel points.
The e-passport includes a contactless near-field communication (NFC) chip that holds the holder's biodata, facial details, identification number and digital signature, along with security features intended to deter forgery.
