Square Enix launched Final Fantasy Resonance on October 22, 2026, and the title quickly became a major success. By the morning of Saturday, October 24, more than 38,000 players were logged in at the same time.
A Classic Turn-Based Experience
Creative Studio 5 at Square Enix partnered with Lancarse to develop the game, which uses an HD-2D visual style reminiscent of Octopath Traveler. The title drops the traditional Active Time Battle system in favor of a tactical turn-based combat that many compare to Final Fantasy X, letting players influence battles with spells and abilities.
The story revisits the first major arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a mobile game that Square Enix shut down in 2025. A new feature called Visions lets players gather well-known franchise characters such as Cloud and Squall, who assist in combat and provide fresh abilities.
Record-Breaking Steam Numbers by Final Fantasy Resonance
Active users now stay above 31,400, according to recent figures. This places Final Fantasy Resonance at the third-highest Steam peak concurrent total for the series, behind only Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which hit 40,564 players at its Steam launch in January 2025, and Final Fantasy 14, which reached 95,150 players during the Endwalker launch in December 2021.
Reception remains overwhelmingly positive. The game opened with a 97% positive rating from 1,517 reviews; updated metrics show a 96.91% positive rating from over 2,200 user reviews, making it the highest-rated Final Fantasy entry on Steam so far. While some users noted UI issues, most praised the familiar yet refreshed combat system.
Final Fantasy Resonance is available on all current-generation consoles, with both physical and digital editions for Nintendo Switch 2. PC players can also enjoy the title, which is fully verified for the Steam Deck.
More Final Fantasy Content on the Horizon
A special crossover event begins on October 28, when Final Fantasy 14 will host the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series in a limited-time activity named Keybound Brawler. Participants can visit the Manderville Gold Saucer to earn exclusive cosmetic items, including glamour sets based on Tifa and Barret.
The event runs until the launch of the upcoming Evercold expansion for Final Fantasy 14. Square Enix will provide further details about Evercold soon and plans to announce a potential release date at Tokyo FanFest during Halloween weekend.
