Google Cloud stated that operations have returned to normal following a malfunction at its British cloud infrastructure on Tuesday that impacted banks, delivery operations, court proceedings, and companies throughout the country.

Trouble struck several offerings inside the europe-west2 London cloud zone during the morning hours of Tuesday. Google later blamed the failure on a power incident at an external facility.

"We have resolved a disruption to Google Cloud services at a third-party facility in our europe-west2 cloud region due to a power event," a Google Cloud spokesperson said on Tuesday evening. "Services have been restored."

Google issued an apology to impacted clients and promised to release an in-depth breakdown of the event on its service health dashboard.

Banks Among the Worst Affected

Major institutions like Revolut, Lloyds Bank, and HSBC faced disruptions, with thousands of clients logging complaints during Tuesday morning. Revolut registered more than 1,500 complaints throughout that period.

Revolut acknowledged that the Google Cloud malfunction impacted certain operations, but confirmed that full functionality returned later. The firm insisted that user funds and information stayed secure the entire time.

Users belonging to Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland, which all operate under Lloyds Banking Group, likewise experienced difficulties with digital banking tools.

While Lloyds did not verify that Google Cloud triggered its technical troubles, the institution stated that the root problems were fixed and operations should normalize.

Glasgow resident Rachael Ellen, who banks with Revolut, told BBC News that she could not pay for parking because her account was inaccessible. She likewise missed seeing a cash transfer sent by a family member.

Courts and Delivery Services Also Disrupted

The failure impacted multiple other British operations, such as Royal Mail, DPD, and Forest, an e-bike business.

HM Courts and Tribunals Service likewise cited difficulties using the video system required for virtual court sessions.

Google stated at first that multiple cloud tools suffered from rising error rates and intermittent network drops inside europe-west2.

The business eventually tracked the issue to a power incident located in europe-west2-b, which is a sub-zone inside the London hub.

Small Businesses Report Financial Impact

Smaller enterprises depending on cloud platforms also suffered from the disruption.

Guy Baybutt, an employee at family-run produce firm The Veg Box Company, explained to the BBC that the enterprise lost access to its site for retrieving and handling buyer purchases.

The company also failed to schedule shipments using DPD, threatening deliveries with delays, while shoppers were unable to submit fresh purchases.

Baybutt noted that such failures can inflict heavy monetary damage on smaller companies unable to easily absorb missing revenue, especially those handling perishable items.

Outage Highlights Problems

The event happened precisely one year after a failure at the primary cloud site of Amazon Web Services took over 1,000 sites, such as British banks, offline for multiple hours.

Major operators like Google Cloud, AWS, and Microsoft Azure manage regional data hubs that power massive volumes of sites, software, and web tools.

Bayes Business School associate dean for research and innovation Prof Feng Li noted that the recent breakdown demonstrated how intensely contemporary economies rely on a limited group of major cloud firms.

He argued that breakdowns within massive cloud networks are inevitable, which makes the extent of the disruption, restoration pace, and presence of backup choices vital.
