Hub Power Company, known as Hubco, has suspended its digital infrastructure plans. A research note from Topline Securities, released following Hubco's annual general meeting, disclosed that the firm officially postponed its proposed data center project because of heavy financial and logistical obstacles.
Why Hubco Delayed the Data Center Project
Hubco is dealing with steep cost pressures. Surging technology expenses and high electricity prices caused the postponement. The huge project also requires extensive infrastructure that currently provides uncertain financial returns.
Management at Hubco outlined specific conditions for proceeding with the initiative. They stressed that the viability of the project depends on proper location, arguing that developers need to construct data centers inside dedicated zones. These zones must also ensure access to multiple reliable grid connections.
Refusing to Start Small
The firm declines to test the market with smaller facilities. While typical companies enter the industry using a standard 5-10 megawatt setup, Hubco expressed a preference for entering at a massive scale by targeting an operational capacity of approximately 100 MW immediately.
This ambition points to the massive upfront investment needed for large-scale data center construction. Hubco has not provided a revised launch date, estimated investment amounts, or specifics about the final project structure.
Rivals Capitalize on the Delay
As Hubco reviews the commercial feasibility, other corporate competitors are moving into Pakistan's digital market. Several major names started operations or announced large investments over recent months.
Quantum Global Data Centre, part of the Gul Ahmed Energy Group, announced a major project alongside Huawei Pakistan. Sky47, backed by Mari Energies, launched its AI-ready Karakoram-01 facility. Indus Cloud, Indus DC REIT, and United Bank Limited partnered to build local cloud and data center infrastructure. Corporate interest is driving the market forward while Hubco holds off.
