An electric vehicle owner stated that a rooftop solar charging setup supplied all of his automobile charging over the last two weeks, generating about 15 to 20 miles of driving range daily.
Michael Apple showcased the GoSun EV Solar Charger at the Montgomery Farmers Market while joining the New Jersey Electric Vehicle Association.
Solar Output Reached 1,054W
Apple mentioned that GoSun rates the equipment for a peak output of 1,100W, and the maximum output he has measured reached approximately 1,054W.
That brings his practical peak close to the figure advertised by the maker.
GoSun states the apparatus can generate up to 1,100W of solar power when set up and can add up to 20 miles of electric vehicle range every day in proper conditions.
Panels Fold Onto the Roof
The solar panels collapse into a small casing fixed on top of the car when they are not deployed at full capacity.
While the automobile is stationary, the panels can be pulled out to form a much bigger solar array.
Apple noted he also observed that the setup keeps producing electricity while stowed inside the rooftop housing, allowing it to charge the included power station while the car moves.
GoSun reports the setup can generate about 200W continuously when shut.
Solar Energy Passes Through a Battery
The charger does not route fluctuating solar energy straight into the automobile.
GoSun uses a 2,400Wh lithium iron phosphate battery to hold power from the panels prior to an inverter delivering electricity for Level 1 electric vehicle charging.
The system is built to stay attached to a car roof and functions with compatible roof crossbars.
Two Weeks of Solar Charging
Apple shared that he had operated the charger for roughly two weeks and felt satisfied with its results.
In that timeframe, he stated the setup met all his charging requirements while delivering about 15 to 20 miles of extra driving range daily.
GoSun prices the EV Solar Charger at $3,999.
