Wilshere, aged 34, initially shook his managerial counterpart's hand before the interaction escalated into a verbal dispute.
Footage showed him batting away Stendel's hand, gesturing with his finger, and then pushing the manager.
The confrontation triggered a massive melee between the substitutes and staff from both benches.
Order was eventually restored, allowing Luton manager Wilshere and his players to thank the supporters.
When questioned about the incident by reporters, Wilshere minimized the altercation.
He stated, “They want to win, we want to win, massive respect for what they are trying to do there.”
He added, “I know they have not got the result but I could see what they are trying to do.”
He concluded, “They are a tough team to play against, they have some good players and yeah we got the win in the end.”
“It got a bit heated but you shake hands at the end and everyone moves on.”
Stendel, aged 52, also addressed the incident, dismissing it as a mere misunderstanding.
He stated, “It was a misunderstanding between me and Jack Wilshere.”
He added, “But I tried to talk with him (after the game) and I think it’s not a big thing.”
Social media users quickly drew parallels between this incident and the famous spat between Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte.
Tuchel and Conte famously clashed at Stamford Bridge back in 2022 following a 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Tottenham.
One online user posted, “Like Tuchel and Conte off of Temu.”
Another wrote, “Not quite the same as the Premier League but to each their own.”
A third supporter commented, “Conte and Tuchel eat your hearts out.”
Luton secured all three points during this League One match held at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night.
Mads Juel Andersen scored the opening goal for the home side before Nahki Wells extended their advantage.
Makenzie Kirk scored a late goal for Barnsley, though it could not prevent their sixth defeat of the campaign.
