Following a fatal school roof caving in Peshawar, the past PTI administration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa faces claims that it softened private school rules to safeguard institutions connected to political figures.

An investigative report referencing anonymous sources states that Section 22(4) of the provincial private schools regulatory law from June 9, 2017, gave officials the power to shut or seal schools for rule-breaking, such as running without official registration.

The findings indicate that a June 23, 2017 amendment deleted that power and restricted penalties to monetary fines. Sources stated that former assembly speaker Asad Qaiser and other leaders possessing private schools requested this modification, which helped commercial ventures tied to Qaiser, Mushtaq Ghani, and additional individuals.

These accusations follow the October 15 caving incident at Al-Khair Education Center located in Dir Colony, Peshawar. Later updates confirmed that 30 children and one female teacher died, while 52 individuals sustained injuries.

Law enforcement officials detained Khan Muhammad, the school owner, over suspected building flaws. The police report states that the administration disregarded warnings regarding worsening walls and ceilings.

Khan Muhammad pointed to heavy rain as the cause, whereas education department representatives characterized the structure as run-down. A regional investigation is currently reviewing the disaster, and officials declared that inspections will take place at public and private schools throughout KP.
