The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) fined Fatima Jinnah Medical University Rs. 20 million after a 22-year-old female student died in the university's Lahore hostel. The penalty was ordered by the PMDC Disciplinary Committee, which said the institution must ensure student safety and welfare.

The committee also instructed the university to improve supervision, monitor students' physical and mental health, and set up mentorship, harassment-prevention and counseling programs for female students.

Committee documents show the decision was sent to the university after the PMDC Council, having previously asked FJMU for an explanation, gave formal approval.

FJMU has responded by filing a review petition with the PMDC to challenge the Rs. 20 million fine.

The incident dates to February 2026, when the final-year student reportedly jumped from the third floor of the university hostel in Lahore.

Police reported she sustained severe head injuries, was taken to a hospital and later died from critical head trauma and massive blood loss.

Initial police findings said the student had been suffering from severe depression for six months, with final-year exams ongoing and a paper scheduled for February 19 after an earlier exam.

She was originally from Kashmir and lived in Lahore with her father.

Police also announced an investigation and created a medical board to examine the circumstances of her death.
