OpenAI is said to be close to clinching another massive private funding round instead of advancing an initial public offering. Sources told CNBC the AI firm is seeking up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, with Coatue and investors from the United Arab Emirates leading the deal.

This follows a Bloomberg report from a month earlier that mentioned a $30 billion raise at a $1.4 trillion valuation. Both outlets note that terms are still under discussion and could shift. CNBC adds that the UAE investment might be paired with an agreement to provide OpenAI additional computing capacity. OpenAI declined to comment.

If the company secures a valuation above $1 trillion in this round, it would become the most valuable private firm ever and set a higher benchmark for its upcoming IPO. The lab filed confidential IPO paperwork in June after its March round valued the ChatGPT creator at $852 billion post-money.

The lofty valuation could also affect Anthropic's pending IPO, which many expect to materialise soon. Reports suggest Anthropic may target a $1.5 to $2 trillion valuation for its public debut, CNBC says. The startup raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May, a round many thought would be its last before going public, and it also filed confidential paperwork in June.
