During Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2026, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority cautioned citizens in Pakistan regarding online scams involving fraudulent calls, texts, and URLs designed to harvest personal data and breach accounts. The regulator cautioned the public against opening unknown links, disclosing passwords, or answering unverified calls without confirming the identity of the sender.
This advisory came out as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2026 to educate the public about social engineering and phishing fraud.
How These Scams Work
According to the PTA, digital fraudsters manipulate individuals into handing over confidential details or granting illegal entry to personal profiles. Fraudsters might employ deceptive prize announcements, fraudulent texts, or pose as financial institutions, corporations, and state offices to win public confidence.
How to Protect Yourself
The regulator recommended that consumers adopt these safety measures:
- Never share one-time passwords (OTPs), personal identification numbers (PINs) or account passwords with anyone.
- Avoid clicking on suspicious links.
- Independently verify the identity of callers who claim to represent banks, companies, or government officials.
- Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts.
- Enable two-factor authentication to add another layer of security.
- Keep devices and applications updated.
- Limit the amount of personal information shared on online platforms.
Stay Alert to Online Fraud
The PTA called on web users to evaluate links carefully prior to clicking and stay vigilant against digital deception tactics. The education drive works to encourage safer web practices and shield personal data from phishing schemes and other digital offenses.
