Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari stated during a press briefing following an inspection of the Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari International Airport expansion that power outages will apply only to specific transformers in theft-hit zones rather than entire feeders starting in June next year.
The minister explained that authorities restricted daily outages to two hours during nighttime hours, which spares citizens from an extra cost of Rs6 for every unit consumed.
Leghari mentioned that the facility, shut down for five years, will resume operations by the close of next year, noting that he secured approval from the prime minister for the ongoing Rs5.5 billion upgrade.
Earlier, representatives from the Pakistan Airports Authority updated the minister regarding the construction efforts, explaining that plans involve lengthening the runway from 6,000 feet to 10,000 feet and increasing its width from 30 metres to 45 metres.
Authorities will also add equipment to support nighttime landings, with construction scheduled to finish within 18 months, while travellers living in the Dera Ghazi Khan Division and surrounding regional districts will access the facility.
