The main suspect arrested for the suicide of student Laiba Ejaz died after being wounded during an armed assault on an Islamabad Police team operating in the Ramna Police Station area, a police spokesperson said.

The deceased was identified as Muhammad Nauman.

Islamabad Police explained that officers were moving Nauman for a recovery operation based on information and his own identification given during the probe.

While the police convoy was traveling with Nauman, four alleged accomplices on two motorcycles allegedly emerged from concealment and opened indiscriminate fire on the officers.

Police said the gunmen aimed to free Nauman from custody.

During the exchange, Nauman was hit by bullets reportedly fired by his own associates and sustained injuries. The police team suffered no injuries because they wore bullet-proof jackets and had taken other safety measures.

Authorities rushed the wounded suspect to a hospital for treatment, but Nauman later died from his injuries.

According to Islamabad Police, Nauman was an accused in the case involving Laiba Ejaz, a student who died by suicide within the jurisdiction of Ramna Police Station.

Police have started search operations to locate and arrest the other suspects believed to be involved in the attack. Officials said further investigation is ongoing.
