State media reported that a strong earthquake hit the remote Tibet region of China on Thursday evening, resulting in 16 fatalities and 46 injuries.

The tremor registered a magnitude of 7.0, bringing heavy destruction to the rugged mountain zone. Reports indicate that over 300 homes caved in, and an additional 339 dwellings suffered damage or total destruction.

Eleven of the injured victims are in serious condition, while rescue crews press on with aid work and damage checks.

The tremor originated at a shallow depth near 10 kilometres, which amplified the destruction in surrounding neighborhoods. The epicentre sat in a mountainous district northeast of Nagqu.

State officials initiated rescue and relief missions immediately to aid locals and gauge the total destruction. Crews face tough terrain in the mountains while handling the crisis.

Leaders instituted a Level III emergency protocol to channel extra supplies and assistance to the impacted zones.

The event wrecked houses and left residents displaced in the isolated territory while evaluation efforts move forward.

Rescue workers will keep working on search and relief operations while leaders track patient conditions and check structures for new dangers.

Current updates suggest the casualty numbers and damage tallies might shift as search units access isolated spots and collect more data.
