A trailer for the upcoming Mass Effect game leaked online yesterday, arriving just one day after Electronic Arts announced the closure of BioWare. Fans first saw the project at The Game Awards in 2020, receiving few updates since then despite confirmations that development remained active.

A Glimpse Into Mass Effect Universe
The two-minute leaked teaser shows that the official title was Mass Effect Universe. The video opens with an unknown ex-military protagonist wearing the same coat from 2023 teasers as he walks into a bar. An Asari approaches him, discussing his combat history while flashbacks display him fighting Krogans with his squad.
The video moves into a montage featuring a Mass Effect relay, combat scenes, and a romance moment. The protagonist narrates that he stops fires before they start, prompting the Asari to threaten that she starts them. Liara T'Soni then appears behind her, stating that stopping her is their mission. A fight breaks out involving the protagonist, Liara, and guards before the title appears.
EA and BioWare have not commented on the leak, but Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier confirmed via sources that the footage is authentic. The trailer indicates the story occurs much later than Mass Effect 3 due to Liara's appearance, and confirms a new protagonist instead of Commander Shepard. Viewers also see familiar aliens and an unknown multi-limbed creature in a tank.
Mass Effect 5 Trailer Unveils Stunning Upgrades & Lost Progress
A disclaimer in the video notes the assets were in pre-production, though the trailer was captured entirely in-engine. Character models feature detailed graphics, and facial animations in the bar scene show significant improvements over past entries.
BioWare's closure leaves this work lost unless EA decides to revive the series, though the current project remains canceled.
