Genesis Antwi Earns Surprise Sweden Call-Up From Graham Potter
Chelsea academy product Genesis Antwi has secured a surprise maiden call-up to the senior Sweden national team. The 19-year-old defender received the selection from Sweden boss Graham Potter despite never having played a single match in the Premier League. Antwi has spent his developmental years within the West London club's system since moving to the English capital at the age of 11.
The young full-back has accumulated only two senior appearances for Chelsea, both of which occurred during the 2024/25 season in the Conference League. Those outings came against Copenhagen and Swedish side Djurgarden. Following his time around the first team, he returned to the youth setups before securing a loan move to French side Strasbourg ahead of the current campaign.
How Genesis Antwi Impressed at Strasbourg
The loan switch to Strasbourg provided Antwi with regular senior minutes that ultimately caught the attention of the national team coaching staff. Under the guidance of Hugo Oliveira at the French club, the right-back has earned a regular spot in the starting lineup. He has successfully started in eight out of the team's ten matches during the current season, displaying the consistency needed for top-flight football.
Sweden manager Graham Potter took notice of these consistent displays in France. Beyond his primary position on the right side of the defence, Potter was particularly impressed by Antwi's tactical versatility. The teenager possesses the ability to operate comfortably on the left side of the backline as well, making him a valuable option for international duty.
Graham Potter Connects With Chelsea Contacts
Potter relied on his previous professional relationships within Stamford Bridge to gather additional assessments on the teenager's character and training habits. The 51-year-old tactician revealed that he received glowing recommendations regarding the full-back from his contacts still working at the English club.
Potter explained the selection rationale during his squad announcement. He stated, Genesis has done well with the Under-21 national team too, and with Emil Holm injured, I have chosen Felix Beijmo as the more experienced option. Then we have Genesis, with his qualities and his pace. I have spoken to people I know at Chelsea, and they think highly of him.
Background on Graham Potter and International Management
Potter took charge of the Sweden national team following a varied career in club management across Sweden and England. His managerial journey gained widespread attention during a seven-year stint in charge of Swedish outfit Ostersund before he returned to the United Kingdom in 2018. He subsequently managed Swansea City in the Championship and Brighton before securing a high-profile move to Chelsea.
His tenure at Stamford Bridge lasted for seven months, followed by a nine-month period elsewhere in English football. Potter eventually returned to his roots in Sweden, where he has taken over the national team program and begun shaping the squad with a mix of established veterans and promising youth prospects.
What Lies Ahead for the Young Defender
Before this senior recognition, Antwi accumulated a total of 28 caps across various youth levels for the Swedish national team. His development through the international youth ranks prepared him for the step up to the senior squad alongside more seasoned professionals.
The defender now has the opportunity to make his official senior debut for his country in upcoming fixtures. Sweden is scheduled to face Bosnia & Herzegovina and Poland in the Nations League, giving the teenager a chance to translate his club form onto the international stage.
