Karachi announced its first mpox infection in an infant this year after a 40-day-old boy tested positive, bringing the province's total to 94 cases.

The child, whose family resides in Landhi, is under care at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital & Research Center (SIDH&RC).

A senior physician at the facility explained that the baby was first seen at a Landhi clinic four to five days earlier, after which he developed a fever and a rash over his body.

His parents then brought him to a hospital in Korangi, where physicians sent him to SIDH&RC for further treatment. Officials say the infant is stable but appears restless.

Hospital records indicate SIDH&RC has admitted 23 mpox patients this year, counting the baby among them.

In recent weeks, two mpox patients died at the centre; one suffered a serious lung problem and the other had chronic kidney disease. The hospital noted that both deaths were linked to those pre-existing conditions rather than the mpox infection.
