Former England midfielder Kieron Dyer has shared the vulgar remark that triggered his shocking on-field fight with Newcastle colleague Lee Bowyer during a 3-0 loss to Aston Villa in April 2005.
Both athletes received red cards after exchanging blows in front of astonished spectators at St James' Park, requiring intervention from team-mates to break them apart. Dyer, aged 47, stated that he essentially told Bowyer he was too terrible to receive a pass.
Telling The Telegraph, he remembered snapping that he was withholding the ball because Bowyer was terribly bad, though he noted the phrasing was an approximate memory. Over twenty-one years later, Dyer expressed surprise upon learning that Bowyer claimed background animosity existed prior to the altercation.
Bowyer recently stated on a podcast hosted by Mick McCarthy and Tony Pulis that they competed for identical positions. Dyer denied any personal hostility, pushing back against claims that he purposefully ignored passing to Bowyer to prevent him from shining.
Referee Barry Knight expelled both Newcastle players with direct red cards while manager Graeme Souness watched his squad endure a heavy defeat at home. The ex-Ipswich player maintains he punched solely in self-defense and notes this event was his sole football brawl. Even after the dramatic clash, both men mended their friendship and stay in touch currently.
