Professional powerlifter and nutritionist Renata Christina Touma faced an embarrassing moment earlier this month during the Copa SP de Levantamento Terra in Sao Paulo, when she lost control of her bladder while attempting a 192.5kg sumo deadlift.
Athletes in the sport regularly face severe risks, including broken bones, nosebleeds, fainting spells from blood pressure spikes, and loss of bladder control during extreme exertion. Competing in the 69KG weight class, Renata began hoisting the heavy bar, but her body shook under the strain as the weight reached her knees, resulting in the mishap.
She failed to complete the lift and showed her frustration by throwing her hands up after stepping off the platform. Rather than hiding the incident, Renata posted videos of the lift on her Instagram page.
She wrote in a caption: “You are in control of your history. No one else. Strength is not just in the weight you lift, but in the choices you make, the discipline you build, and how you respond to challenges. You don't control everything that happens. But you can decide what to do with what's within your reach.”
Although the video went viral, Renata remains focused on improving her personal best. She stated: “Today my current record is 192.5kg. What was once a dream is now my third attempt. And I promise that, in the next competition, that number will go up and I'll manage to complete it!”
