Immigration New Zealand announced four updates to student visa policies, tightening compliance and employment regulations while offering certain learners extra time to organize their next moves following graduation. These adjustments become active on October 27, 2026.

Master's-by-research scholars will no longer have unlimited employment privileges while studying. Instead, they share employment guidelines with other master's participants, permitting up to 25 hours of work weekly during academic terms and full-time employment throughout scheduled breaks.

Officials strengthened immigration guidelines so that English proficiency becomes a primary consideration when evaluating if learners can satisfy visa requirements.

Furthermore, Immigration New Zealand gains the authority to pause visa application processing across additional scenarios, such as during probes into possible rule violations by educational institutions.

In a separate adjustment, authorities lengthened the duration granted to certain learners following graduation to determine their future plans. Individuals whose documentation lapses one month post-graduation will receive two months instead. The current March 31 expiration timeline stays identical for permits following that schedule.
