Turkey is constructing a massive new marine airport in the Black Sea province of Trabzon with an estimated price tag of £732 million, marking the nation's third facility built directly on the water.

The upcoming aviation hub will feature a runway measuring 3,000 metres long and 45 metres wide to accommodate larger aircraft, accompanied by a taxiway of identical length and width.

Plans include an 110,000-square-metre terminal capable of serving up to 10 million travelers annually, alongside a new air traffic control tower.

Trabzon's existing facility currently relies on a single 2,640 metre runway and serves about three million passengers every year.

Construction requires dumping over 100 million tonnes of fill material into the Black Sea, plus the installation of a 6,000 metre breakwater.

Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that the present runway cannot accommodate rising traveler volumes at the location.

Uraloğlu stated, "We will give Trabzon a new, higher-capacity, modern airport that meets international standards."

Project completion is targeted for the early 2030s.

Trabzon currently hosts a population of around one million residents and attracts visitors with its green hills and cliffside monasteries.
