Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif agreed to examine direct flight routes connecting their nations during a three-day state visit to Pakistan, aiming to enhance tourism and bilateral relations.

During a joint ceremony, President Muizzu expressed support for the ongoing talks about direct flights, stating that better air links will open fresh avenues for tourism and draw the nations closer together.

President Muizzu emphasized tourism as a primary sector for future partnership, mentioning prospects for halal and Muslim-friendly tourism while observing that both nations share cultural values and experiences to back cooperative efforts.

The two nations executed 20 agreements and memorandums of understanding across multiple fields during the trip, spanning information technology, health, education, agriculture, fisheries, defense, and tourism.

Both leaders committed to raising bilateral trade from $13.9 million to $200 million over the span of the next two years.

The journey of President Muizzu aligns with the diamond jubilee of diplomatic ties between the Maldives and Pakistan, which began in 1966. This marks the first trip by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years.
