Pakistan could limit household gas to just eight hours a day this winter as officials ready a seasonal distribution plan to address the expected shortfall between demand and supply.
Sources say the Petroleum Division has finished early work on the winter schedule and will present it to the prime minister before any decision is taken. The proposal would allow gas for three main meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner, while the rest of the day would see restricted supply.
The plan might be rolled out separately by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) according to their service zones. SNGPL currently delivers about 487 million cubic feet of gas per day to homes, whereas SSGC supplies roughly 286 million cubic feet daily.
These possible limits arise because household gas use usually climbs in winter, adding strain to the national supply network. Families facing cuts may need to turn to other cooking fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which could raise household costs.
Nevertheless, the eight-hour schedule is still only a proposal and has not been formally approved. The government will announce the final decision and exact supply times after reviewing the plan.
