Primary school textbook printing tenders remain delayed in Punjab, creating fears of a book shortage for the upcoming academic year. The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board has already released tenders for grades 6 through 10, but documents for grades 1 to 5 are still delayed.
Reports indicate that about 30 fresh textbooks spanning nursery up to grade 5 are planned for publication next year, aiming at an approximate total of 300 million printed books. Last year, authorities released these printing tenders in September, but October is already halfway finished without any primary school tenders yet.
Publishers expressed worry over the setback, noting that private schools begin their new academic term on January 1. These publishers urged authorities to release the remaining printing documents immediately to prevent a shortage.
The Education Department stated that tenders for grades 1 to 5 will launch shortly and promised that all books will reach students prior to the term beginning.
