A man in his 70s passed away at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in Karachi, bringing the total number of rabies fatalities in Sindh to 40 for the year.

Officials stated that the patient lived in Baldia Town and failed to get preventive care after a dog bit him over three weeks prior.

Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre registered more than 11,000 dog bite incidents and 10 rabies deaths during the current year, which includes this recent passing.

This fatality comes after two other recent deaths caused by rabies, involving a 12-year-old boy from Hyderabad and a 38-year-old man from Diplo in Tharparkar.

Medical professionals noted that numerous incidents go undocumented because certain individuals depend on faith healers or home treatments instead of visiting medical facilities. Specialists demanded better hospital treatment access, humane stray dog population management, and increased public education.

Bites from dogs represent the primary source of rabies transmissions, though bites from rabid wild animals can also transmit the virus.

Specialists caution that the virus is nearly always fatal after symptoms appear, but prompt wound washing, timely vaccines, and rabies immunoglobulin when required can stop the illness following exposure.
