Provincial Education Department sources reported that 36,967 classrooms in government schools across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are currently in a dilapidated state. Out of this total, 19,224 rooms must be rebuilt, while 17,743 need repairs, across a provincial network of 34,784 public schools.

These statistics apply to specific classrooms rather than entire school facilities needing construction work. Meanwhile, the Private Schools Regulatory Authority noted that 11,542 private schools hold official registration in the province, though the regulator does not track unregistered institutions and only intervenes upon receiving complaints.

Education Department Director Jaffar Mansoor stated that parent-teacher council money is funding the construction of 1,000 new classrooms. He added that the region contains over 34,000 public schools featuring hundreds of thousands of classrooms.

These revelations emerge following intense worry regarding educational building safety after a fatal roof cave-in at a private facility located in Dir Colony in Peshawar. Officials subsequently instructed the Private Schools Regulatory Authority to prepare safety rules addressing structural standards, checks, room limits, and emergency exit plans for private schools.
