WhatsApp is currently testing a dynamic bottom navigation bar that reduces in size when users scroll downward on Android devices. WABetaInfo reported that this capability surfaces in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.41.6. The finding arrives while WhatsApp keeps revising its Android user interface through various design modifications.

As individuals scroll down their chat list, the navigation menu contracts into a small floating pill situated at the base of the display. The symbols remain viewable while occupying significantly less room. Reversing the scroll direction causes the menu to widen back to its original dimension. This functionality functions across every tab rather than just the chat list, matching the exact method Instagram currently employs in its application.

This modification aims to minimize visual clutter. While people scroll through messages to locate a particular chat, they seldom require the navigation tabs. Consequently, the reduced bar provides additional display area for the message list. The full-width bar still appears whenever individuals open a fresh tab.

This represents the fourth styling adjustment made to the Android navigation menu during recent beta testing. Version 2.26.38.10 brought a floating layout featuring rounded corners and eliminated text captions below the icons. Version 2.26.41.7 later changed the tab indicator shape from a pill to a circle. WABetaInfo points out that this layout is still undergoing development.

WhatsApp relocated its navigation menu from the screen top to the bottom in 2024. That modification aligned the platform with standard mobile applications and simplified single-handed operation. At that time, WhatsApp stated the bottom menu sat closer to thumbs and remained comfortable to view. The platform has since continuously adjusted the appearance and function of the bar, which features four tabs named Chats, Communities, Status, and Calls.

The dynamic navigation bar remains under active development. According to WABetaInfo, the feature will reach certain beta participants in an upcoming release. WhatsApp has not provided a schedule for the public rollout. Individuals wishing to test the feature early may register for the beta testing channel via the Google Play Store.
