Bollywood actor Imran Khan has been told to depart India by October 28 after police detained him during a rally, issuing a formal Leave India Notice that sets the exit deadline.

The nephew of Aamir Khan received the notice after taking part in a demonstration at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan.

Indian media, quoting police sources, reported that Khan was served the notice after joining a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Officials said the measure was taken because he took part in the gathering despite not holding Indian citizenship.

Prior to his arrest, Khan stated he attended the event as a resident of the city, not as a representative of any group.

"I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted," he said, adding that he was questioning the suppression of people's voices.

Clips of his detention later spread online, and he posted a photograph after being taken into custody.

The protest was sparked by claims that a revision of the electoral roll might bar eligible voters. The Election Commission denied any misconduct, explaining the exercise aims to delete duplicate and ineligible entries.
