Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman saw red in Arsenal's League Cup clash against Fleetwood Town.

The Gunners had been frustrated by the League Two side in the last-16 tie at Highbury Stadium.

Those frustrations spilled over in the 85th minute when Dowman was sent off for kicking at Harrison Neal.

The Fleetwood player had made a hard challenge on the teenager near the touchline.

After the ball was played, Dowman lunged at Neal, sparking a tussle between the teams.

Referee Michael Salisbury acted quickly, issuing the Arsenal prodigy a straight red card.

The incident left Sky Sports commentators stunned, with one remarking, "This is amazing".

Dowman appeared shocked as he walked off the pitch after the dismissal.

He then received a few words from manager Mikel Arteta while heading to the tunnel.

The Spaniard seemed to give the youngster a death stare before delivering a harsh telling-off.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson was not impressed with Arteta's response, saying on Sky Sports, "This didn't look good to me at all."

Co-punctualist Jobi McAnuff added, "He gave him a proper talking to. Clearly not happy."

The match began with a long delay caused by a drone flying over the stadium.

Fleetwood's Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave the hosts an unexpected lead in the 21st minute, holding off defender Marli Salmon before firing past Illan Meslier.

Arsenal equalised after the break when Victor Gyokeres bundled in the level-making goal.

However, the Premier League champions could not find a winner, and the game proceeded to a penalty shootout.
