Google Wallet is quietly developing a new QR code payment function that could permit Android users to handle transactions abroad through Alipay+. Google has not released any official statements regarding the launch yet, though the project emerged during a recent app teardown.
The function operates straightforwardly by having users scan merchant QR codes at Alipay+ locations via Google Wallet. Transactions finish through Alipay+ using a Visa or Mastercard credit card previously stored in Google Wallet, while the scanner features a Supported QR code label to identify compatible codes.
An analysis of Google Wallet Android version 26.29.954779400 uncovered the capability on July 28, 2026, where resource strings for Traveler QR emerged beside user instructions. The app cautions customers that payments finish on Alipay+ with the stored card, and prompts users to input a Visa or Mastercard if their current card is ineligible.
Alipay+ connects Google Wallet to a vast payment system currently spanning more than 100 markets and 1.8 billion consumers via 40 partner wallets. Partner applications involve PayPay in Japan, Bluecode in Europe, and KBank in Thailand, alongside GCash, Kakao Pay, Touch and Go, and TrueMoney across Asia, meaning Google Wallet customers might soon buy items at any Alipay+ vendor in the region.
Testing data also points toward an initial rollout region since a sandbox link references a DBS hosted test domain, implying Singapore could be an early market while the teardown places the tool inside a Japan focused context where Google Wallet currently depends on NFC and FeliCa for tap payments.
Google has not verified a public release date for Traveler QR, but Alipay+ stated in October 2025 that cross border acceptance grew beyond 100 markets, with over 6.5 million wallet consumers completing an initial Alipay+ cross border transaction in the first half of 2025.
For Pakistani travelers, the capability might alter payment methods across major Asian locations including China, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, and the Philippines by letting visitors bypass cash and currency conversion. Local Pakistani wallets such as JazzCash and Easypaisa do not belong to the Alipay+ network yet, meaning Pakistani travelers still require a Visa or Mastercard saved inside Google Wallet.
