Manchester United Legends Celebrate Sir Alex Ferguson 40th Anniversary Dinner
Former Manchester United players gathered in large numbers to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson stepping into the club management role. The most decorated football manager of all-time began his legendary tenure at the famous Old Trafford dugout on November 6, 1986. What started as a casual chat with then-chairman Martin Edwards at a service station blossomed into a dynasty of silverware over his 26-and-a-half year tenure.
Behind the Scotsman, the historic Treble, and 13 Premier League titles remains a group of players willing to back their boss until their final breath. Around 100 high-profile guests gathered in the Theatre of Dreams lofty halls to raise a toast to the 84-year-old. Current United boss Michael Carrick lined up for a talent-laden snap, alongside legends like Edwin van der Sar and John O'Shea. Between all of the players present, the icons collectively boasted a huge 26 Premier League titles.
Who Attended the Historic Manchester United Reunion?
The stars in attendance at the dinner presented fans with a unique glimpse at the cross-section of Fergie's United eras. From the first Premier League era, when Lee Martin scored the winner in the 1990 FA Cup final replay, to Denis Irwin, Clayton Blackmore, and Dion Dublin. They all turned up suited and booted to honor their former mentor. Mike Phelan also showed up, remembered as one of Fergie's reliables, especially after becoming his assistant in the next decade. He is still the only individual to serve as player, first-team coach, and assistant manager with the Red Devils.
Joining the ranks too was Brian McClair, the first United player since George Best to score 20 league goals in a season, alongside Gary Pallister and Paul Parker. From the 1999 Treble-winning roster, David May, Ronny Johnsen, Wes Brown, and Jesper Blomqvist appeared to toast their former manager. Then came Darren Fletcher, Nemanja Vidic, and Quinton Fortune who all fought for Fergie's last few titles. Ryan Giggs, a man that spent a lot of time with Fergie as United's all-time record appearance holder, also came out to raise a glass. Even Jonny Evans, who lifted three Prem titles before his return in 2023, turned out for the celebration, alongside attendees Javier Hernandez and Robin Van Persie.
Notable Absences and Scheduling Conflicts
While the turnout featured many iconic names, it is impossible for everyone to make every social engagement with a tightly-packed football calendar. Both Gary and Phil Neville missed out on the anniversary dinner after a scheduling clash with their joint TV appearance in the US. Supporters will be hoping for many more celebrations with Fergie, especially after a year of worrying health scares for the legendary manager. Sir Alex Ferguson was spotted in the stands earlier in the week as United succumbed to a heartbreaking 3-2 Champions League defeat at the hands of Roma, though he was not seen at their subsequent Sunday night game against Aston Villa.
History of Honoring Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford
The club has a rich history of commemorating the monumental milestones achieved by the legendary manager during his tenure and beyond. In 2006, the Premier League held a celebratory lunch for Ferguson's 20th anniversary attended by the majority of the club's managers. In 2011, United commemorated Ferguson's 25th anniversary by naming Old Trafford's north stand after him to cement his legacy permanently. However, ties between the former boss and the current hierarchy have faced scrutiny, especially when Sir Jim Ratcliffe ended Fergie's 12-year run as club ambassador last year.
