Parliamentary Secretary for Federal Education and Professional Training Rabia Naseem Farooqi informed the National Assembly on Monday that universities throughout Pakistan now require student internships to build practical skills and boost job readiness.

During Question Hour, Farooqi noted that the country contains 282 public and private universities, and the compulsory internship policy started in 2023.

Degree programs now assign three academic credit hours to relevant internships, while the Higher Education Commission oversees enforcement at all higher education institutions, according to her statement.

Farooqi additionally reported to lawmakers that the government set up Youth Development Centres inside universities following instructions from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to assist graduates with career preparation.

These centers offer career and academic counseling, educate students regarding job openings and employer demands, and connect learners with industry professionals.

She explained that the program connects universities more closely with the employment sector to help young adults secure jobs after graduation.
