Could David Beckham Buy Manchester United?
Former midfielder Paul Scholes has suggested that David Beckham could become the owner of Manchester United, offering a potential alternative to the current leadership. Speaking openly on a podcast appearance, the former England international addressed whether his former teammate could step in to change the direction of the institution. Scholes pointed out that if the financial backing is available and the desire exists, there is no obvious barrier preventing such a move from happening.
During the discussion on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes outlined how he envisions his former colleague handling the ownership role. According to the pundit, a potential purchase would see a discreet presence rather than a hands-on daily spectacle. Scholes stated, I don't see why not. If they've got the wealth to do it, he can he wants to do it, more importantly, before adding that Beckham would likely remain in the background rather than acting as a constant fixture in the stadium stands.
Criticism of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer Family
The endorsement of a potential new owner came alongside sharp criticism of the current powers running Old Trafford. Scholes expressed deep dissatisfaction with the two-and-a-half-year spell overseen by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, describing the atmosphere surrounding the team as depressing. He also reiterated long-standing fan grievances regarding the Glazer family, noting that multiple ownership models in recent years have failed to deliver the required results on the pitch.
Reflecting on the general sentiment among supporters, Scholes remarked that previous setups have not worked and expressed an openness to almost any alternative leadership. The club has experienced a steep decline in silverware since 2014, lifting only five trophies in total during a prolonged period away from the dominant era of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
David Beckham As Club Owner and Football Executive
David Beckham already holds significant experience in football administration and club ownership. He serves as a co-owner of Major League Soccer franchise Inter Miami, an organisation he bought in 2014 for just £25million. That North American franchise has since grown substantially, with current valuations placing the outfit at $1.45 billion, which equates to approximately £1.21 billion.
The American team has attracted global superstars such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Sergio Busquets, securing the MLS Cup last season. Alongside his American venture, Beckham also holds a stake in EFL League Two side Salford City, which sits at the top of the standings after 14 games.
Financial Hurdles and Valuation Disagreements
Despite the endorsement from Scholes, fellow former player and podcast co-host Nicky Butt raised significant concerns regarding the feasibility of any takeover bid. Butt highlighted the enormous financial expectations of the current majority shareholders as the primary obstacle for any prospective buyer wishing to acquire the Premier League institution.
According to Butt, the current owners would demand an astronomical figure, noting that the valuation currently sits at approximately £8 billion. However, Butt questioned the realism of that price tag given current sporting realities, pointing out that missing out on the Champions League, declining commercial rights, and lower player market valuations should theoretically drive the asking price down.
