Shah Allah Ditta Buddha Caves Preservation Project Inaugurated in Islamabad

Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz Sharif officially opened the Shah Allah Ditta Buddha Caves Preservation Project in Islamabad on Wednesday. This development marks an important step toward safeguarding and promoting the rich Buddhist heritage and shared cultural history found within Pakistan. The launch event brought together federal ministers, diplomats from Buddhist countries, and various government officials at the historic site.

Following the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, Hamza Shahbaz Sharif toured the ancient caves to inspect the completed restoration work. Secretary National Heritage and Culture Division Asad Rehman Gillani accompanied the leader, providing a detailed briefing on the completion of the preservation project, its key features, and the overall financial cost involved in restoring the archaeological treasure.

Historical Background and Significance of the Caves

During the opening ceremony, organizers screened a documentary that detailed the historical background and archaeological significance of the Shah Allah Ditta Caves. The film illustrated the deep association of the location with ancient Buddhist worship and the broader cultural legacy of the region. These caves bear physical testimony to the presence and religious practices of Buddhist communities that once inhabited the area centuries ago.

Addressing the gathered audience, Hamza Shahbaz Sharif expressed his appreciation for the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture. He praised the department for its concerted efforts to protect and restore the historic location. He noted that standing at the site, surrounded by lush green trees and magnificent mountains, brought a deep sense of connection to the past. He commended the initiative for actively safeguarding a vital part of the country's shared history.

Promoting Interfaith Harmony and Minority Rights

During his address, the former Chief Minister emphasized that Islamic teachings promote deep respect for other religions, the protection of minority rights, and the safekeeping of their places of worship. He observed that protecting such historical sites projects a positive and soft image of Pakistan internationally. The restored location is expected to transform into an attractive destination for travelers, allowing citizens and foreigners alike to explore the nation's diverse background.

Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi echoed these sentiments while speaking at the event. He thanked Hamza Shahbaz Sharif for inaugurating the project and reaffirmed the government resolve to protect all historical Buddhist landmarks across the nation. He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, such preservation efforts actively strengthen cultural diplomacy, foster interfaith harmony, and enhance the country's global standing.

Improving Infrastructure and Boosting Local Tourism

To ensure the success of the new site, Hamza Shahbaz Sharif stressed the urgent need for improved road connectivity to the caves. He formally requested Federal Minister Aurangzeb Khan Khichi to coordinate with relevant authorities to construct a better and more direct access road. Better transportation links will facilitate visitors, encourage domestic tourism, and generate new employment and economic opportunities for residents in surrounding communities.

Appreciating the emerging commercial activity near the caves, the leader noted that families deserve dedicated recreational spaces to enjoy Pakistan's historical and natural beauty. He extended a warm welcome to diplomats and international visitors, particularly those originating from Buddhist countries, inviting them to tour the site with their families. He expressed hope that the location would stand as a lasting symbol of mutual respect and religious harmony while praying for the continued progress, peace, and prosperity of Pakistan.

Call for Awareness and Future Steps for Visitors

Federal Minister Aurangzeb Khan Khichi called upon the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation and media organizations to actively build public awareness regarding the religious and historical significance of the caves. He urged them to promote the destination widely among domestic travellers and international tourists. The government hopes that increased visibility will draw more history enthusiasts to the capital.

A notable gathering of dignitaries attended the inauguration ceremony, including Federal Minister Rana Mubashar, Member of the National Assembly Anjam Aqeel Khan, former Deputy Mayor of Islamabad Syed Zeeshan Shah, Special Assistants to the Prime Minister Aon Chaudhary and Talha Barki, along with senior bureaucrats and foreign diplomats.
