Former Fulham player Martial Godo baffled supporters by appearing to warm up his eyes prior to a league fixture. The 23-year-old Strasbourg winger spent three years at Craven Cottage, featuring twice in the Premier League. Following a loan stint at Wigan in League One, French club Strasbourg bought him for £6million last year. Godo holds an important role in the squad and featured in the starting lineup for Strasbourg's 5-1 victory against Auxerre in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Before the match began, he displayed an eccentric routine that left spectators confused. Godo appeared to build mental sharpness and awareness through a sequence of finger movements. Footage captured him raising both index fingers while rapidly shifting his gaze between different positions. He then shut each eye quickly while moving his hands vertically. Godo repeated this process using his thumbs before running off.
The odd strategy seemed to work as Godo scored during the dominant victory for Strasbourg. He netted his second goal of the match to extend the lead to 2-0 after fellow player Dario Essugo, on loan from Chelsea, opened the scoring. Former Aston Villa and Southampton player Cameron Archer scored for Auxerre, followed by a penalty from Conrad Harder and two goals by Gessime Yassine to complete the blowout.
Despite the heavy scoreline, spectators focused heavily on Godo's unusual routine. One supporter posted on X, saying, "I mean, they won 5-1 so maybe he's onto something." Another commenter stated, "Training his eyes before training his feet. That's different level of preparation." A third user simply asked, "What's going on?"

Godo addressed the strange moments following the match during a television interview. He stated, "As an attacker, I like to do visualisation before the match. It puts me in the conditions of reality." These warm-up drills are reported to improve reaction times and peripheral vision. Former Manchester United player Wout Weghorst previously performed similar drills with his fingers to stimulate brain activity and focus prior to matches while with FC Twente.
