Gary Neville tore into Manchester United's under-performing squad after watching his former club suffer a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

The former captain, 51, was seated in the Old Trafford commentary box when the Red Devils were trounced.

The loss left manager Michael Carrick's position in jeopardy.

Earlier this month Carrick, 45, faced criticism when Lisandro Martinez publicly complained about the board.

His tactics were also attacked by captain Bruno Fernandes after a 4-1 loss at Como, after which Fernandes was dropped and benched for the Bournemouth game.

United fans chanted for Carrick but also threw sticks at their own players as they walked down the tunnel.

On his post-match podcast, Neville admitted Carrick is "probably" headed for the sack, but placed most of the blame on the players.

He said: "Michael Carrick, a brilliant man. A man of integrity, credibility, decency, professionalism. High quality footballer - consistency and reliability."

Neville added: "Everything that group of players in that dressing room aren't. He's going to suffer for it because he's not been able to deliver. It's been too much for him in these last few months."

He continued, "There's a few of them that aren't that professional. There's a couple of them... I live in Manchester, they're not that professional, some of them. I've got no time for them. There's a few of them that don't go to bed at the right time. Don't eat the right things. Don't think about Manchester United every single minute of every single day."

"They walk around like they're King William... they're nothing. Some of those players lack standards. A banner in the Stretford End read 'standards', but they went a long time ago," Neville said.

He clarified he was not condemning every player, noting "some good professionals" remain, but urged that those below standard be removed immediately.

After the defeat, which left United 16th in the Premier League with one win from eight matches, Carrick said he does not know if he will stay in charge.

He told Sky Sports: "I totally understand the situation. I'm not expecting anything, in particular, to be honest. I'm carrying on as normal. I love this place, I always do what I feel is best for the football club whatever decision is made."

Carrick added, "It's a tough situation. There's no hiding from it. What it looks like, what's next, I really don't know. I always do what's best for this football club. I love what I do. I feel the responsibility."
