Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan told the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry that construction of the Sukkur-Karachi Motorway will begin next month.
The highway will consist of three approved sections and will provide high-speed road access to Karachi Port, the minister added, aiming to boost connectivity and ease the flow of goods to and from the port.
Khan did not give a detailed timetable for the works nor indicate when the full motorway will be opened.
In the same speech, he outlined financial reforms at the National Highway Authority, noting that the agency is trying to lift its revenue from Rs. 66 billion to Rs. 160 billion. He said administrative costs have been capped at Rs. 50 billion to channel more money into infrastructure projects.
The minister said the NHA is focusing on major road projects nationwide to improve national connectivity and its financial health.
He also promised business leaders that the Ministry of Communications will keep working with the private sector and address issues that affect trade and commerce.
