Federal authorities agreed in principle to review broadening a focused petroleum subsidy, covering diesel and up to five million additional recipients, insiders reported to ProPakistani. This progress stems from discussions held at the Prime Minister House between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Jamaat-e-Islami head Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman.
Insiders noted that if joint technical panels solidify this growing agreement, fuel items might see a price drop of Rs. 30 to Rs. 40 per litre for qualified individuals.
Targeted vs Blanket Subsidy
Discussions largely centered on the preferred subsidy format, which served as the primary disagreement during talks. Authorities maintained that focused assistance was mandatory under the International Monetary Fund framework.
Officials explained that a universal subsidy might jeopardize the arrangement by aiding rich and poor citizens equally.
As an alternative, administration representatives proposed enrolling up to five million additional buyers into the current fuel subsidy framework, alongside potential inclusion of older vehicle and motorcycle models.
JI Pushes for Diesel Relief
Jamaat-e-Islami argued strongly for diesel inclusion, pointing out that farming and other vital industries depend heavily on the fuel. The political group stated that omitting diesel penalizes growers and increases expenses throughout the market.
In reaction, officials signaled willingness to incorporate diesel into the focused plan to a suitable degree.
Insiders mentioned that authorities already lowered domestic diesel rates by Rs. 32 per litre by separating local rates from global benchmarks, following persuasion and talks led by Jamaat-e-Islami.
Both expert teams will maintain efforts on the structure. Final details regarding reach, qualification rules, and discount figures rely on these ongoing discussions.
Prior to this, Hafiz Naeem stated that the premier requested an extra 7 to 10 days to resolve Jamaat-e-Islami requests to remove the petroleum tax.
