When two brothers open a Mississippi blues bar in horror film Sinners, it starts out like a great party. That is, until someone welcomes in a very troublesome vampire, and all hell breaks loose. This mirrors a reporter's visit to the Sinners haunted house at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights.
Walking arm-in-arm with a best friend, visitors laugh, scream, and cling to each other while the scary story unfolds. The Florida Halloween event has run for 35 years, drawing film fans to fully immersive horror houses. Ten elaborate sound stages are built each year to frighten and entertain.
Horror stands as the fastest-growing film genre, helping Halloween Horror Nights reach its current scale. What began in 1991 as a single haunted house open for three days is now a two-month event that nearly sells out every night.
Movie fans and casual visitors encounter intricate details inside dark passageways that make it easy to feel part of the films. Alongside the 2025 box office hit Sinners, Universal collaborated on other thrillers like Evil Dead Burn and Hellraiser. Lora Sauls, the assistant director of creative development, noted that securing Hellraiser took a decade.
The wait paid off, as Hellraiser provided the night's most jump-scares. Cenobites and ghouls jump from dark corners, curtains, and doorways amid strobe lights, screaming, and fog. Additional houses feature Netflix's Stranger Things 5, an Ozzy Osbourne house with music and gothic elements, and an original house titled Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control.
Five other houses feature aliens, cannibals, classic monsters, and cyber villains. Visitors need a separate ticket from regular theme park passes, and the fear persists outside the houses. Universal Studios Florida transforms completely after sunset for a massive street party.
Food and drink pop-ups offer themed items like Meat Grinder Red Velvet Cake and Hellraiser Spicy Meatballs. Five scare zones keep the energy high, including a Fortnite-themed neon playground, Club Horror, The Sideshow Of Decay, Infernal Carnival Of Nightmares, and Downtown Clowntown.
Recommended for guests over 11, the venue offers family-friendly movies by day, including DreamWorks Land, Epic Universe, and Islands of Adventure. A Universal All-Parks Ticket covers all theme parks and Volcano Bay water park. Events run until 2am, allowing multiple trips through the haunted houses.
