A computer-based interlocking signalling system is now active at Lahore Cantt Railway Station, and Lahore Railway Station will receive the same technology over the next couple of months to supersede the old manual point system known as kanta.

Railways Lahore Divisional Superintendent Inamullah Khan told Dawn on Friday that updating the Lahore division began at Shahdara Station before moving to Raiwind and Okara Cantt.

He noted that railway teams are installing the technology at other locations and will soon update Lahore Railway Station. The Cantt Station received priority treatment because of its complicated yard layout.

Pakistan Railways is updating signalling infrastructure with computer-based interlocking to improve train operations and safety. This technology swaps out traditional mechanical and relay setups for computer controls managing signals, track points, and routes.

Operators manage signals and points via a computer interface under this setup. The technology verifies route availability and point positions, stopping conflicting movements before a train moves forward. If a fault occurs, its design defaults signals to a restrictive state to lower accident risks.

Following installation, testing, and commissioning, trial operations started on October 21 at Cantt Station, where several trains passed safely.

Inamullah Khan stated, "It is a fully automated system that sets the route, ensures safe train operations and records all operational activities related to interlocking and operators."

A project official mentioned that the technology is now in place at all stations between Shahdara and Lahore, excluding Lahore main station and Khanewal Railway Station.
