A Ligue 1 match between Auxerre and Le Mans on Sunday turned chaotic when goal-line technology seemingly awarded a phantom goal.

Hosts Auxerre, managed by former Southampton boss Will Still, fell behind early after Lucas Buades scored for the visitors.

French goalkeeper Paul Nardi appeared to make a brilliant save on the line, getting a solid hand to the deflected shot before falling on top of the ball.

After the ball was cleared, the referee received a watch alert indicating that the goal-line system registered the ball crossing the line.

While Southampton loanee Cameron Archer later equalized for Auxerre, Still remained furious over the incident.

The coach argued that the ball never crossed the line and pointed out that the review footage zoomed in on the goalkeeper glove rather than the ball.

Still said, It is his glove. I swear to you it is his glove that is in the play.

He added, If you see the image behind the goal, it is impossible for that ball to have gone in the net.

During his press conference, Still displayed a screenshot from behind the goal to reporters and claimed that only some of the officials received the alert due to a computer problem with VAR.

According to Still, the officials described their technical failure as unprecedented while deciding to uphold the call based on a single alert.

Still fumed, I am surprised that in 2026, in Ligue 1, we are not able to provide better information.

The manager made clear he did not blame referee Willy Delajod, instead directing his frustration at the technology itself.

Former Auxerre academy product Djibril Cisse also expressed outrage on X in response to footage of the play.

He wrote, At what point did the ball go in? We are gonna have to stop the nonsense, friends. Once again against us.

Cisse added, It is starting to be REALLY TOO MUCH now.

RMC Sport reported that Auxerre released a statement demanding answers regarding an unacceptable failure with major consequences.
